instructions to pour a slab of concrete

Instructions for large DIY projects requiring concrete often forget to tell you hw to mix and pour a slab of the stuff. Well, here are the basics made simple:

Concrete is a mixture of sand, gravel (they call it aggregate in the building trade) cement and water.

You can mix it with different quantities of the four ingredients to get different types of concrete which have different uses.

For most home and garden projects you will find that a mix of 1 part cement, 2 parts sand and 4 parts gravel is fine.

Get a large board (to protect the lawn or patio you are working on) and add together the dry ingredients (sand, gravel and cement). Your pile should be about half the size of what you imagined you would need. Mix thoroughly with a shovel and then make a little well in the centre because we now add water.

When adding water, you will need to stir the mix as you go, much like making pastry dough. make sure your mix does not get sloppy. It should be able to support itself in a heap without running flat.

Now use it quickly before it dries out and goes hard.
