How to wire a cable to a plug

There are either two or three wires in cables which need to be attatched to a standard British electrical plug.

Both the cables shown above are suitable for wiring to a plug.

Firstly, strip each wire so it looks like the pictures above. Stripping the wires can be done with a simple blade and a bit of care, but there are also numerous tools on the market that make stripping a very easy task. The frayed copper wires within each of the coloured sheaths should be twisted together by hand.

Open the plug by unscrewing (anti-clockwise) the single screw in the middle of the plug between the three pins

Connect the wires to the correct terminals. This is the most important bit. If you don't do it properly, you can risk both electrocution and fire.

The brown wire is the Live wire and should be connected to the terminal by the fuse (marked 'L').
The blue wire is the Neutral wire and should be connected to the terminal (marked 'N').
The green and yellow is the Earth wire and should be connected to the terminal at the top (marked 'E').

The metal core of the wire you stripped must be fully inserted into the correct terminal and the little screw on the terminal should then be tightened by turning it clockwise.

Fit the correct fuse in the plug.

Replace the plug cover, tightening (clockwise) the single screw in the middle of the plug.
